    “The Power of Leadership”

You and I are in the Business of Selling!

Pepsi Co. has a new CEO, for the first time in its history a leader not from its Sales Department and not having run a successful division of the company before ascending to CEO.  She has no experience in Sales at all.  So far, Sales have fallen 5%, Market share has declined 3%, and millions have been invested in experimental new product development programs clearly not derived on market feedback but of a new vision for the future.

Leadership of any business simply MUST be laser focused on Sales and Marketing and Cash-flow.  We’re ALL in the business of Sales and Marketing.  Cue the famous Mr. Gamble of Proctor & Gamble quote, “Any fool can make soap.”  But that’s unwelcome truth for many who want their businesses to be about many things other than Sales and Marketing.

    “The Power of Leadership”

Even during Halloween, nothing can be Scarier than a Decision…

The other day we talked about experience in business as influence on making decisions… I am constantly engaged with Clients and Prospects struggling with making decisions.  The ability to make fast decisions based on the best information available is a critical skill in entrepreneurial success and most people appear to me to be over-thinking and getting in the way of their own success.

The way of the ‘Renegade Entrepreneur’ or the highly effective Leader in business is rarely smooth and pleasant and almost never comes with crowds of adoring fans cheering you along the way.  Ultimately and often, we have to choose one thing most important to us over many other choices.  But it’s rare that ‘normal’ people can be pushed to a make a clear choice as we must, so you must learn this skill.

Entrepreneurial leaders face daily situations where anything less than clear choice of one thing over all others is failure or surrender by default.  We often face choosing results vs. many other choices including safety, convenience, comfort, popularity, and avoiding making enemies.  Entrepreneurs face a unique challenge of whether to have disappointed, frustrated, and unhappy people around us or being disappointed, frustrated, and unhappy ourselves.  Highly effective entrepreneurial leaders are willing to make a lot of decisive choices others won’t even confront.

One thing is clear to me; there is no more powerful force in our human experience than the power of choice.
