    “The Power of Leadership”

Another of David Byrd’s characteristics of Effective Leaders…

#3 – Effective Leaders Communicate Effectively

Communication is a two way street.  The communication given and the understanding received must be congruent or effective communication has not taken place.  Often when leaders are describing communication problems within organizations, those problems are usually stimulated from the top down.  That is because organizations usually model the communication style of their leaders.

Leadership must assume the responsibility for establishing the proper environment for effective communication.

Effective leaders are aware of the importance of feedback and exposure in their communication style.   Have you ever worked for someone who constantly asked questions but never exposed any information about why the answers were important?  It is frustrating!  This is an overuse of feedback and a shortage of exposure.  On the other hand, have you ever worked for someone who could not stop talking about themselves and their agenda?  That is frustrating and annoying!  This is a misuse of exposure in the absence of feedback seeking.

I have observed complete and positive culture changes within organizations when leaders assume the responsibility for establishing and effective communication environment.

“If you just communicate you can get by. But, if you skillfully communicate, you can work miracles.” – Jim Rohn
