“The Power of Leadership”
Many people go into situations expecting negative outcomes, they expect to lose…
I recently read an interview with Brendan Suhr, who played and coached basketball in the NBA. At one point he was an Assistant Coach to Chuck Daly, with the Detroit Pistons during the period when the Pistons were a dominant force in professional basketball. Brendan was asked about the differences between those Pistons and other NBA teams. Brendan said that, unlike other organizations he’s been with, everybody with the Pistons genuinely and whole-heartedly expected to win every game.
I have read nearly identical accounts from other elite teams in pro sports such as the Dallas Cowboys in the Jimmy Johnson coaching era. Jimmy has said that his team expected to dominate opponents. None of these cases are statements of arrogance, or cocky swagger, or even unbridled positive thinking; it is a reflection of diligent preparation, detailed organization, and refined skills.
If you don’t honestly expect to win, you’re probably entering a situation you should not be investing in, or a situation for which you are not properly or thoroughly prepared.
