“The Power of Leadership”
As companies and individuals begin to deal with the challenges of 2009, they have choices to make. Do they dwell on their weaknesses or focus on their strengths? How we move forward is one of those choices that truly belongs to us as individuals. After all, it is an individual or collection of individuals who make these choices for companies as well.
Over the past decade, Gallup has surveyed more than 10 million people worldwide on the topic of employee engagement (or how positive and productive people are at work), and only one-third strongly agree with the statement:
“At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.”
Research suggests that having someone at work who regularly focuses on your strengths can make a dramatic difference. That does not mean that managers and supervisors do not have a responsibility to correct weaknesses in those in their line of report when a weakness directly effects a person’s job performance. However, managers and supervisor should not dwell on those weaknesses. Address them, then get back to focusing on the strengths.
If a manager or supervisor primarily “ignores” those whom they supervise, the chances of these employees being actively disengaged in your business is 40%. If a manager or supervisor “focuses on an employee’s weaknesses”, the chances of these employees being actively disengaged in your business is 22%. If they “focus on an employee’s strengths”, the chances of these employees being actively disengaged is 1%.
With “poor management” remaining the number one reason, world-wide for high-talented employees to change jobs, why would you settled for “disengagement” that can be corrected? Talk to us at Performance Institute. We have some excellent training programs to help your management team “reengage”.
“A little praise is not only merest justice but is beyond the purse of no one” … Emily Post.
