“The Power of Leadership”
My friend, Tony Rubleski, is a well known Marketing and Publicity Guru who talks a lot about the mindset of avoiding procrastination and getting things done. Here are some suggestions I’ve heard from Tony over and over again…
To get ideas implemented and achieve greater results:
#1 – “Done is much better than doing.” Good enough is good enough and getting projects done by a reasonable deadline is always preferable to waiting and waiting for everything to be absolutely perfect, which will never happen anyway!
#2 – “Break an idea into steps for implementation.” Systems are our friends! Break things down into clearly defined and manageable steps and schedule when each step will be put into motion to ensure deadlines are met. Failure to do this will increase the likelihood that an idea is never implemented at all.
#3 – “Set a deadline and block time to achieve it.” The best way to ensure that a project is given priority is to block time off on the calendar to specifically work on that project. And you must resist the temptation to let the pressure of the little things that always come up to bump into your blocked time and force you off schedule.
#4 – “Have someone hold you accountable.” If you’re the boss, this tip is for you! It’s easy to make a deadline when you’ve been assigned one and have to report back, but when you’re only accountable to yourself, it’s too easy to allow urgent matters to distract you and blow off your self-imposed deadline. Let someone you trust know of your goal and volunteer to have them hold you accountable for achieving it.
#5 – “Imagine that your toughest competitor is planning a major move.” Imagine your toughest competitor just bought the lot across the street and is planning a mega store in your front yard, you’ve got six months to live, what are you going to do?!?! This is a great exercise and one that a leader could always be playing in their mind to ensure they are always aggressively on marketing offense!
Five great strategies to avoid procrastination, stay UNcomfortable, and always on the offensive.
