    “The Power of Leadership”

Continuing with Thoughts from Dr. Frank Gallo, Chief Leadership Consultant, Hewitt Greater China:

One reason that China has special leadership needs is demographic. An entire generation of potential business leaders languished during the Cultural Revolution. Only a small percentage of that generation became business leaders. The result was a relatively young work population compared to that in the West. This will change over time as the Chinese population ages, but until then, there will be a leader shortage in the talent pool.

Another reason for China’s inability to quickly develop leaders is cultural. Many of today’s senior managers in China got to their positions through personal struggle. They see this as the best way to get ahead and are not keen on developing special programs to develop new leaders. “Throw them in the water and let them try to swim. The ones who go farthest and fastest will survive. The others may drown or get rescued.” Of course, the Western view is to first teach them to swim. This way you do not lose needed talent.

“Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragement, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.” … Thomas Carlyle
