    “The Power of Leadership”

It is popular to say that children learn by what they see, not by what they hear.  Policy manuals and instructional books have their place, but they do not establish corporate culture.  Leaders set the example by what they do.

In a restaurant recently, I saw a father and his two sons walk in.  The father was a good looking man and well dressed.  He obviously had something serious on his mind because his brow was furrowed and he had a stiff posture, with his hands stuck deep in his pockets.  He walked briskly and with his eyes straight ahead.  His sons, maybe 6 and 8 years old, followed just behind him.  They also had their hands in their pockets and were walking purposefully and with a serious glare in their eyes.  They were mirror images of the father.  They were too self-absorbed to notice, but the whole restaurant watched them and smiled.

When a leader arrives late but demands punctuality of staff, the cognitive dissonance that is created will manifest in staff member’s attitude in many and various ways.  Corporate culture is established at the top by one or two key people.  Their deeds and behaviors will be injected through every vein of the organization.

Would you be excited to have your entire day recorded on video and presented as a training tool?

“The shoe store owner was standing outside his store, staring at the competitor’s shop across the street… ‘How’s business?’ I asked.  ‘Great,’ he said ‘Haven’t sold any shoes in 2 days.’ ‘How can that be great?’ I asked.  ‘Because the guy across the street hasn’t had a customer in 4 days.” – Dr. Herb True

    Have a great day!
