“The Power of Leadership”
One definition of professional is a person who does things even when they do not feel like doing them. A professional is not blown about by the winds of the moment. Professionals stay focused on the successful accomplishment of their mission and they do the difficult things.
Many charismatic leaders get into trouble when they cease doing the difficult things in order to maintain approval or to be liked. Politicians who depend on opinion polls to determine their actions do not make effective leaders. If you run your management program based on opinion or popularity, you will not last long as a leader. The tendency of the masses is to move toward mediocrity, thus making opinion polls a poor source of vision. Failing to do the difficult things will eventually get you into trouble. And doing the difficult thing means not allowing public opinion to sway you from what your heart, your gut, and your instinct is telling you.
Perhaps the truest mark of a leader is that he or she is willing to stand alone. Leaders must not only have vision and communication skills, but also tremendous personal resolve. While leaders attract followers, at any moment they must be able to walk away from them, or they will become followers themselves.
