• Why Train People?

    “The Power of Leadership”

As the economy continues to tighten, companies continue to make the hard decisions of where to cut costs until the economy turns around.

We’ve heard the message over and over from one economic down-turn to another that the successful companies do not cut back on marketing and employee training during down-turns. Yet, we continue to see companies that do not understand the importance of marketing and training make substantial cuts in both areas. This is like saying that you believe the economy will not turn positive again. But it will turn positive again! Will your company be ready?

Allow me to provide you with some food-for-thought questions with regard to training:

    * Why train in the first place?
    * What is the linkage between training and job performance?
    * How do you ensure the transfer of learning from the classroom to the workplace?
    * What types of follow-up take place after the training event?
    * What is the relationship between training and performance appraisal?
    * Who is your training leader?
    * How do you measure return on investment?
    * What responsibility does the manager of the employee who attended the training have in ensuring sustained development?
    * Who decides what to train, whom and when to train?
    * What’s the difference between training and education?

If you do not have answers to these questions, then I assure you that you are not getting the most out of your training dollars. In many situations we look at, it is not a case of how much money you are spending on training and development but of why, what and with whom you are spending your training and development money.

Rather than cutting your training budget, maybe you should determine first if you’re really getting the return on your current training dollars that you believe you are.
