“The Power of Leadership”
“It’s not my fault!” It doesn’t apply to me you say!
Is all this too remote for you? You’ve never been hit by a car when crossing the street. You’ve never been cut off by another car when you’re trying to change traffic lanes. You’ve never had poor service in a restaurant. You’ve never had something break just minutes after you purchased it.
Well, we don’t have to look far to find all the excuse-making and fault-finding you could possibly want.
* I just didn’t have time.
* Everybody else does it.
* I couldn’t help it.
* My watch stopped.
* It’s your fault I’m angry.
* Sorry I’m late. The meeting ran longer than I expected.
* When you lost money on the stock market, was it your stockbroker’s fault?
* When you paid too much money for the last house you bought, was it the real estate agent’s fault?
After a while, don’t we begin to live our excuses? Ask yourself – in all honesty – when was the last time you heard someone (including yourself) take responsibility for something negative that happened to them? When did you last hear someone say, in effect, “I apologize for being late in paying this bill. I obviously didn’t take the responsibility to save a percentage of what I earned and live within my own personal budget.”
If we are honest with ourselves, most everything negative that happens to us can eventually be traced back one way or other to our own weaknesses. Thus it is also true that the only way to correct our weaknesses is to stop blaming others and to start taking personal responsibility for our own actions.
“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her.” … David Brinkley
