“The Power of Leadership”
It is not my fault! Our flight from responsibility!
When we blame bad air and sugar in our cereal and television advertising for the unacceptable behavior of our children and ourselves, we are in deep trouble.
When we blame others for how we feel about ourselves, we are in deep trouble.
When our politicians constantly fault the other party, the president, the Americans, the Chinese, the Russians, and simply “factors beyond our control” for the ills of a nation and the world, we are in deep trouble.
I am not suggesting that a corporation or a country can be wantonly irresponsible. Every corporation or country has total responsibility to ensure that its policies and products are not harmful to its customers, employees or the public. But in our flight from responsibility, we are giving up our ability to choose how to live, our ability to control our own destinies. Increasingly, we are making ourselves “victims” to outside forces. Only when we realize that each of us as individuals, and only each of us as individuals, is responsible for our own lives will we be able to reach the highest levels of personal and professional achievement, and happiness.
“We make our fortunes and call them fate.” … Benjamin Disraeli
