Today, a message about Stress and its effect on your performance … We’ve learned that YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, YOU ARE WHEN YOU EAT, and now we see that YOU ARE THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL YOUR STRESSORS.
Stress is a very real part of our life these days and for many of us, it’s thwarting our ability to develop or maintain a healthy physical body. There are six different types of stress that we encounter: Physical: Includes physical trauma, degenerative conditions, and postural stress. Chemical: Including any and all toxic substances that enter our body via our mouth, nose or skin. Electromagnetic: From electronic devices. Psychic: Includes emotional, spiritual, and mental stress. Thermal: Refers to any type of temperature change. Nutritional: Refers to the quantity and quality of foods being ingested.
Even though there are six major categories of stress, each of the stressors individually and collectively become a source of physiological load on our body. Though each of us may react to stress a little differently on the outside, it affects all of us the same on the inside. All Stress has the same Stress effect on our bodies.
Just as there are many types of stress, there are many ways of reducing stress in your life and your body. One great example for many is exercise, but intense exercise is itself Physical Stress and for some an added Psychic Stress as they “Stress” themselves over having to exercise or failing to exercise when they don’t.
Some forms of exercise however are designed specifically to reduce Stress and its effects on the body and if you’re concerned that Stress is keeping you from performing at your best please consider these examples of exercise for working “in” vs. working “out.” A few examples are meditation, breathing exercises, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Qi Dong. These exercise systems can be effectively used to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), facilitating anabolic activity such as digestion and tissue repair. If you think stress may be part of the reason you are not responding to exercise as you should, I encourage you to try eliminating non-physiological stressors from your life; try replacing some “work out” sessions with one of the various “work in” exercise systems mentioned above.
Health and happiness to you,
